About

I grew up in a small community in northeast Indiana, where our church community played a major role in our lives. This blog is about cooking from the church cookbook, The Dutch Delight.

The Apostolic Church community in Bluffton, Indiana has a strong Swiss-German heritage, and the food we ate was influenced by this.  Equal parts old world knowledge, pragmatism, and sweet tooth, food prepared by my mom, my grandma, and my great grandma formed the palette I think of as “home”. At some point the church put out a cookbook — The Dutch Delight. Collecting recipes from members, it is telling that the Dessert index is twice as long as the Entree index. The Dutch Delight has since had three sequels, but the first is what I remember growing up.

Why “Dutch” Delight when our heritage is Swiss-German? For some reason “Dutchy” was the adjective used to describe something particularly Apostolic. I know, it doesn’t make any sense to me, either.
